To go along with the summer, here are some things to help you lighten up!

• Accessorize your deck or patio just as you do inside - just use container plants!  The same "rules" apply (vary the heights, blend the colors, keep textures similar), only the accessories are different!

• If foundation plantings aren't for you, or if your are still in the young phase, plant something fast-growing (hostas are miraculous) to add interest and softness and to cover the slab that may be visible.

• Outdoor lighting needs to be cleaned just like indoor lighting.  Clean fixtures, glass coverings, and even light bulbs for a bright summertime shine!

• If you don't have access to a garden, bring the outdoors in.  Green plants are always nice, but try some tropical blooming plants (hibiscus are fabulous) for some summertime color.  All you need is a sunny window!

• You've probably heard the suggestion to take down heavy window treatments to let the sunshine in . . . but don't forget to clean the windows!  Otherwise the beauty of the outdoors is diminished.

• And don't forget the fireplace!  Change the mantel to a summer theme (think seashells) and add flowers or greenery to the firebox.

Now, sit back and enjoy!  These days are gone much too quickly.  We'll soon be bringing our attention back inside!
