Spring is when flea markets and tag sales begin to really heat up (which is the only thing heating up in the chilly Northeast!).  Don’t pass up those bargains, but be sure you display them effectively using these tips:

  • collectionsDon’t feel like you have to display all the pieces of your collections.  Not only will having fewer items really showcase those on display, you can have fun changing them throughout the year – new things without buying new things!
  • Display an odd number of items.  Limiting it to three will really highlight the display.  However many items you display, an odd number is always more pleasing to the eye.
  • Vary the heights of the display.  The smallest should ideally be one-third the height of the middle piece, which should be one-third the height of the largest piece.  This keeps the height variance interesting, but not too great.
  • Make certain your display is appropriate to the room.  For example, old kitchen tools should be in the kitchen, beautiful china in the dining area, and antique linens in the bathroom or bedroom.
  • When you’re able to buy “up” (meaning a better quality piece than the one you already own), recycle the older piece.  That way, you’re sharing the pleasure!
